Creating impactful videos is a valuable skill that can elevate your message and engage your audience.

Here at Biteable, where video is the language of choice, Ben Stephenson is our uncontested video-making expert. With a background in animation and years of video-making experience, Ben knows how to craft a stand-out video.

In this article, we’ll uncover Ben’s tips and tricks for crafting compelling videos that captivate viewers and deliver your message effectively. Or watch the full Video Vantage episode below.

Video planning essentials

The journey of video creation begins with careful planning. According to Ben, these are the crucial factors you’ll want to consider:

1. Message first

Start by defining your message and tone. What are you trying to convey, and what emotions do you want to evoke in your audience?

2. Style and branding

Consider whether you’ll adhere to your brand’s guidelines or explore a different theme for your video. Themes are great for special videos, like holidays and events.

3. Consider your materials

Decide on the materials that you know you want to use or that will make your video interesting. This could include images, videos, animations, and more.

4. Dive in

Biteable makes it easy to dive straight into the creative process. “You’re basically using Biteable as a living storyboard,” Ben explains.

Move scenes around and add new elements as you go to see what works and what doesn’t.

Ben’s best advice? Don’t be afraid to experiment and let your creativity flow.

The ideal scene length

Determining the ideal scene length is crucial for holding your viewers’ attention, but it’s something a lot of first-time video makers struggle with.

“People tend to write longer sentences, but video should be more dynamic than a PowerPoint,” Ben explains.

Ben’s advice is to keep things short and sweet.

  • Avoid lengthy sentences. Aim for scenes lasting between 1 to 5 seconds.

  • Break up longer paragraphs. For longer paragraphs, break them into smaller sentences or use commas as natural scene breaks.

  • Sometimes, one-word scenes work too. For a fun and dynamic effect, experiment with single-word scenes with eye-catching transitions.

Choosing seamless scene transitions

Scene transitions play a pivotal role in setting the tone of your video, but choosing the right transitions can be more complicated than it seems.

To help you pick the Ben best transitions for your video’s message, Ben shares a few of his favorites with us:

Fun and upbeat videos

This is the most common kind of video to make — your message is fun and upbeat, so your transitions can be too.

Ben suggests using a fun and vibrant scene transition, like swipe left or zoom in.

Thoughtful or serious videos

For more thoughtful or serious videos, Ben’s go-to is the cross fade transition. You’ll want to use this same transition all throughout your video.

Bonus tip: Avoid a clash of the transitions

Scene transitions aren’t the only fun transition options in Biteable. Text animations offer an easy way to add movement to your text, but can clash if paired with the wrong scene transition.

You shouldn’t use a swipe left transition with an elegant rise text effect, for example — “those two motions fight each other,” Ben explains.

Instead, Ben suggests pairing:

  • The swipe up transition + the elegant rise text effect
  • The circle reveal transition + the scale down text effect
  • The swipe left transition + any text effect that comes in from the side

Nailing the soundtrack

Although music is often the last thing we think about when creating a video, it’s one of the most important elements to consider. “Music is huge,” Ben shares. “Audio is 80% of animation.”

Because your soundtrack sets the tone and the mood of your video, “the wrong music can send the wrong message,” Ben explains.

Ben’s top music tip: Music sets the tone and guides viewers’ emotions. Choose music that aligns with the message you want to convey.

Acing the balancing act of visuals, audio, and text

Achieving the right balance between visuals, audio, and text depends on your video’s style and message.

Ben advises:

  • Tailor your approach to the video’s style. Short and punchy videos may have fewer words and more flashy scene transitions, while longer, information-rich videos benefit from more text and subtle music.

  • Experimentation is key. Use Biteable’s flexibility to try different approaches and fine-tune your video until it aligns with your vision.

  • Ask for feedback. A fresh pair of eyes can do wonders for your video.

Common video creation mistakes and how to avoid them

Drawing from years of video experience, Ben highlights some common mistakes to steer clear of.

  • Avoid overcrowding scenes with excessive text. Break up longer text into smaller, digestible portions.

  • Maintain consistency in font size, especially for body text (keep it around 8pt-10pt).

  • Properly center text to enhance readability.

  • Ensure adequate contrast when choosing text colors.

  • Avoid placing typography over backgrounds where it’s difficult to read.

  • Embrace the “less is more” approach by decluttering scenes.

  • Select music that suits your video’s topic and message.

Ben’s advice for avoiding these common mistakes? “Use Biteable’s pre-made scenes,” Ben suggests. “Our scenes have been designed by experienced designers and have been designed to be as foolproof as possible — why not take advantage of that?”

In a world where remote work and global teams are increasingly prevalent, effective internal communication is the backbone of a thriving organization. Leveraging video as a powerful tool can bridge gaps, enhance engagement, and ensure that everyone is on the same page, regardless of their location or time zone.

Biteable CEO, Brent Chudoba, joined Haily on The Video Vantage podcast to discuss Biteable’s internal comms journey, and how video can revolutionize internal communication to be more dynamic, engaging, and impactful than ever before.

Watch the episode below, or keep reading to catch Brent’s best tips and tricks.

The importance of internal communication

Biteable is a fully remote and global company — we have team members in all corners of the globe, from Australia to North America. And not to brag, but we kind of feel like we’ve mastered the art of using video to communicate within a dispersed, async team. But that didn’t happen by accident — Biteable’s CEO, Brent Chudoba, was the force behind bringing video to the forefront of Biteable’s internal comms toolkit.

When Brent joined Biteable at the start of 2020, he knew the importance of internal communication — but he had no idea how quickly he would need to master it in the face of a global pandemic and a rapidly changing world.

“When Covid happened in 2020, we realized how powerful our tool was for communicating and keeping our tool aligned,” Brent shares. “There was so much communication that had to happen… we found that video was an essential part of keeping our async team in the loop.”

Brent’s three pillars of internal comms

When asked what makes internal comms so important, Brent is prepared with a handy, wisdom-filled alliteration — “Awareness, alignment, and action,” he explains.

  • Awareness. Think about how you might keep your team aware of what’s going on. How do you repeat that in a way that scales well?
  • Alignment. Awareness helps action, but real alignment requires constant repetition to stick.
  • Action. How will you make sure that people take action on the things you’re telling them?
  1.

While video isn’t the only way to achieve awareness, alignment, and action (written communication and live sessions are important too) “video is probably the most powerful way,” Brent shares.

“You can use visuals, incorporate text and images…you can make things exciting,” Brent says.

As another bonus, video doesn’t leave anyone out. “If someone misses a meeting because they’re out on vacation, video is a great way to have a library of content they can catch up on,” Brent shares.

How we use video to stay connected at Biteable

There are three key ways Brent uses video to communicate internally with the Biteable team. A weekly update, a monthly all-hands meeting, and the occasional ad hoc communication.

Weekly updates

Brent sends out a weekly video update every Sunday night (a tradition he’s maintained for over three years!). Unlike traditional email updates, video allows for a more engaging and informative delivery. It enables Brent to convey essential messages, address confusion, and maintain a consistent rhythm of communication.

“For me, that’s a way to stay in touch with folks. It keeps the rhythm going,” Brent shares.

All-hands meetings

Biteable’s monthly all-hands meetings are video-studded events. “Half of our all-hands is just people pressing play on a video, and then being available for a Q&A,” Brent says. “It’s a much more effective use of everyone’s time.”

Product managers and people from all departments can use video to create concise and visually appealing presentations, making the meetings more efficient and engaging for all team members.

Haily agrees that videos are a game-changer for efficient and stress-free company-wide meetings. “It really takes the pressure off the presenters and delivers the information so much faster than having someone present a live demo where there’s probably going to be some sort of bug that shuts the whole thing down,” she shares.

Ad hoc videos

The third type of video you can find Brent sharing is the occasional ad-hoc update or announcement. This might be something fun — like a bonus day off announcement, or something more serious that needs to be shared quickly and concisely. Video’s dynamic nature allows for creative and interactive messages that capture the team’s attention effectively.

27
How my leadership team fosters a culture that cares

The recipe for effective internal comms videos

We know we’re trying to achieve awareness, alignment, and action, but it can be overwhelming when thinking about where to start. Don’t stress! Brent shared a few of his top tips for creating internal communication videos that work.

Go in with a plan

Just like any other communication medium, videos require planning.

“Experienced video creators don’t jump into a video tool and just start adding stuff,” Brent explains. “Consider what your message is, and what you want your audience to get out of it.”

Outline your goals, message, and script before diving into video creation. A well-structured plan ensures that your video effectively conveys the intended message.

Pro tip: Try using Biteable’s AI-powered video assistant to assist with the planning, scripting and first draft of your video.

Get creative

A common misconception is that video is basically the same as a PowerPoint presentation.  “Videos are not slides turned into moving slides — they can be much more interactive — video can be exciting,” Brent shares.

Don’t be afraid to get creative with your videos. Use animations, vibrant colors, and different media to make your content engaging. Video is not merely a slideshow; it’s a dynamic tool that can include call-to-action buttons, interactive elements, and more.

Add, don't distract

When you’re armed with thousands of animations and graphics, it can be tempting to go to town on the visuals — but Brent warns that it’s all a balancing act that you want to get right.

“The role of animation is to support the message, not to deliver and carry the message,” Brent shares.

Visual elements and animations should complement your message, not overshadow it. Ensure that your video’s visuals enhance the message’s delivery without being distracting.

Pro tip: Browse Biteable’s animation library. Every animation is made by our in-house studio team, so you won’t find them anywhere else.

Brent’s best tips for boosting internal communication

Repeat, repeat, repeat

“If something matters, you have to say it three times in three different ways. You have to say it over and over again,” Brent says.

Important information should be reiterated through various channels. Say it in different ways, such as through all-hands meetings, Slack channels, emails, and videos, to ensure it reaches everyone.

“Not everyone is paying attention 100% of the time,” Brent explains. “If I’m sharing something that matters, I’m going to do it over and over again.”

Establish evolving communication guidelines

Establish clear communication guidelines and routines within your organization. Create a rhythm for updates and evolve these practices based on feedback and changing needs.

At Biteable, we have a set of communication guidelines that outline how to use public Slack channels for almost everything. The idea is that if people want or need to know something, all the information is available.

“My primary job is to make sure as many people as possible know what’s going on,” Brent shares. “I think we do a pretty good job with weekly updates and making sure people talk about what they’re working on.”

These frequent updates give others a chance to ask questions and clarify the task at hand.

“I really try to push that,” Brent explains. “Because often people don’t want to bother people, but no one thinks of information sharing as bothering.”

In the modern classroom, educators have a powerful tool at their disposal: video. The integration of video content has transformed the educational landscape, providing innovative ways to engage and inspire students.

Let’s explore five creative ways to leverage video in the classroom to engage, connect, and inspire.

1. Introducing new horizons: The power of video introductions

The start of a new school year can be a daunting time for students and teachers alike. Help settle the nerves with a friendly introduction video you can send out early or play on the first day.

Let your students get to know you with some fun facts, or share your classroom ground rules with a fun and engaging video.

Create an AI-powered Meet the Teacher video with Biteable’s Automated Video Assistant.

2. Sparking intellectual fires: Videos as discussion catalysts

Imagine setting the stage for stimulating classroom discussions with a thought-provoking video. Starting a new topic can be like opening a door to a whole new world of knowledge. And what better way to guide your students through that door than with a well-crafted video?

Visual content can serve as a springboard for students to delve into deeper conversations related to the subject matter. These discussions encourage critical thinking, allowing students to express their viewpoints, analyze content, and develop their analytical skills.

The result? A dynamic way to present complex concepts, making the learning journey more engaging and exciting.

Introduce any topic with the help of an AI-generated video, like the one below:

3. Cultivating creativity: Video projects as student assignments

Nurturing students’ creativity is a key aspect of education. Why not give them the opportunity to express themselves through the creation of videos?

Assign projects that require students to craft educational videos, presentations, or even short films. This not only hones their creativity but also equips them with valuable digital literacy skills.

By letting students take ownership of their learning through video projects, you’re encouraging them to engage with the subject matter in a unique and compelling way.

4. Flipping the traditional: Video lessons for a flipped classroom

The flipped classroom model has gained momentum for its effectiveness in promoting active learning.

Instead of traditional lectures, consider assigning pre-recorded video lessons for students to watch at their own pace outside of class. This frees up in-person class time for interactive activities, discussions, and personalized support.

Students come to class prepared with questions, and educators have the opportunity to engage them in deeper exploration and collaborative problem-solving.

5. Lights, camera, feedback: Videos for personalized feedback

Beyond being a tool for instruction, video can also be a game-changer when it comes to providing meaningful feedback to students.

Imagine this scenario: instead of receiving written feedback on assignments, students are greeted with personalized video feedback.

This approach offers a more dynamic and immersive feedback experience. Educators providing feedback through video adds a human touch that text alone often lacks. Facial expressions, tone of voice, and gestures can convey nuances that written comments might miss.

Record yourself and your screen at the same time, or share a video like the one below:

Create education videos with Biteable

The incorporation of video content into your teaching methodology can yield remarkable results. By harnessing the power of visual and auditory elements, educators can create a multi-dimensional learning experience that resonates with students.

From introducing new concepts to sparking discussions, fostering creativity, and enhancing assessments, video has the potential to revolutionize the way we teach and learn.

Create engaging videos for your classroom quickly and easily with the Biteable video maker. Start with a template (or an AI-generated video) and share your video in minutes. Start your free 7-day trial today. No credit card required.

Some things need to be seen to be understood — like your product’s cool new feature or the movie Inception. Today, we’re delving into an innovative tool that has the potential to transform your marketing game: screen recordings.

Effortlessly showcase your product’s features, guide your audience through complex processes, or provide step-by-step tutorials – all through the engaging medium of recorded screens.

Unlocking the value of screen recordings

At the heart of every successful marketing endeavor lies the art of strategic communication. Screen recordings provide a unique vantage point, enabling you to engage your audience in a visual journey that speaks louder than words alone.

From product demonstrations that leave a lasting impact to interactive tutorials that empower users, screen recordings offer a versatile canvas for your marketing narrative.

Apply the age old adage of “show, don’t tell” to your marketing content to elevate your strategy and amplify your message.

Choosing a screen recording tool

As you embark on your screen recording journey, the first decision you’ll encounter is choosing the right recording software. With a myriad of options available, it’s crucial to opt for software that aligns seamlessly with your objectives.

Look for features like:

  • High-quality video capture: We’re talking 1080p or higher. Let’s keep those pixels sharp!
  • Customizable recording options: You’re the director of this show. Make sure you can capture the whole enchilada or just a slice.
  • Annotation and editing powers: Add extra info with on-screen text and animations.

Some screen recording tools, like Biteable’s built-in screen recorder, allow you to record both yourself and your screen at the same time. Look for this option if you’re wanting to add a personal touch to your screen recording videos.

Crafting your screen recording strategy

Like any marketing campaign, a successful screen recording venture begins with a well-thought-out strategy. Your objective — whether it’s to educate, inform, or inspire — will guide the entire process.

Structure is key; outline the content flow, decide on the tone that resonates with your brand, and craft a narrative that holds your audience’s attention from start to finish.

  • Outline key points: Sketch out the scenes you want to conquer. Remember, victory lies in a smooth-flowing recording.
  • Set the tone: Decide if you’re going for Sherlock Holmes or stand-up comedian vibes. Keep it consistent for that extra punch.
How to screen record for more personal and engaging videos
How to screen record for more personal and engaging videos

Bringing your vision to life

With your strategy in place, it’s time to roll up your sleeves and hit the record button.

Prepare your recording environment to ensure everything on screen aligns with your message. Speak clearly, articulate your points concisely, and guide your viewers through your content with finesse. The result? A seamless recording that delivers your message effectively.

  • Clear the clutter: Tidy up your digital battlefield. No one wants to see those embarrassing desktop icons or your 37 open tabs.
  • Unleash the power: With a heart full of courage, hit that record button and guide your audience through the marketing maze.

Create videos that drive action

Activate your customers or team with impactful, on-brand videos.

Elevating your content with post-production finesse

The recording might be complete, but the journey isn’t over. Post-production enhancements can take your content to the next level. Trim any unnecessary segments to maintain a streamlined flow.

Integrate annotations, text overlays, and even background music to emphasize crucial points and maintain viewer engagement. The goal is to create a polished piece that reflects your brand’s professionalism.

  • Trim the fat: Cut out those “umm”s and “uhh”s. Your audience’s time is precious.
  • Annotations and overlays: Highlight what truly matters with digital markers and neon signs.
  • Enchant with audio: Add background music or a voiceover that complements your marketing masterpiece.

Sharing your screen recordings

Last but never least, the grand finale – sharing your masterpiece. You didn’t make this recording for it to collect digital dust, did you? Here’s how to spread the love:

  • Share on social media: March into the social media arena and proudly share your creation. Most social platforms love video — the algorithm will reward you kindly.
  • Embed on your website: Embed your video on your website or blog — screen recorded videos can be extra helpful for help centers and FAQs!
  • Add to your onboarding: Add a personal touch to your onboarding by linking to your videos.
  • Send directly to puzzled customers: If your screen recording solves a customer’s problem, send it to them! Both the solution and the personal touch will be appreciated.

Seamlessly record and share your screen with Biteable

Screen recordings aren’t just a tool; they’re a window into a new realm of marketing possibilities.

Small businesses with small budgets are all too familiar with the struggles of trying to compete with bigger brands. Competing for views and engagement on social media is no different — but video has entered the chat and leveled the playing field.

On this episode of The Video Vantage podcast, Haily and Mike discuss how to leverage video’s power as a small business. Watch the full episode below, or keep reading to learn our top tips for thriving with video.

Video strategies that help smaller brands stand out

When done right, the ‘small’ in your small business can be your marketing superpower. Compared to giant companies with deep marketing pockets, a small business’s marketing strategies will look slightly different — and so they should. According to Mike and Haily, the authenticity of your small business is what you want to lean on when creating videos.

Customer testimonial videos

Not sure where to start with video? Start here.

“Sometimes I read testimonials on a brand’s website, and I think, ‘Are these even real?’” Mike shares. And he’s not alone — in today’s day and age, consumers are much more savvy — and suspicious — than they used to be.

Video testimonials are not only a million times more engaging, but when we can see and hear a person sharing their opinion on a product or service, it also feels a million times more genuine.

Genuine, authentic video testimonials can be your greatest marketing tool. Plus, they’re easy to create — all you need is a willing customer and a camera.

If you’re looking to take a page out of the big brand book, look no further than product demo videos. Companies like Apple or Microsoft are known for their snazzy, highly-produced product videos when launching a new product. These kinds of videos are an excellent way to reach and engage millions of potential customers at once — and they can be jam-packed full of benefits.

The good news? You don’t need to be Apple to make a product video, and you don’t need Apple-sized budgets. Try a Biteable template — or try out our AI-powered product demo video assistant. Or, Mike suggests looking at sites like Kickstarter for endless inspiration.

“You can definitely create high-quality videos with less-expensive software now,” Haily agrees. You don’t need to worry about fancy equipment either — iPhone cameras are high-quality and get the job done.

The importance of storytelling in video marketing

Once you’ve decided on a video strategy, the next thing to think about is your story.

“I think storytelling is super important in all marketing — it’s how humans have been passing down information through generations. It’s authentic,” Mike explains.

At the core of marketing is a need for businesses to connect with their audiences, and knowing your story will help you do that.

What is your business trying to achieve? What’s your mission? Why? How are you trying to achieve it? What can your audience accomplish with your product or service?

Figuring out what resonates with your audience — and what your story is — is a critical step in the video marketing process.

Using storytelling videos to build a community online

It’s not just your product launch videos that should have a story — according to social media expert Haily, storytelling also helps you build community.

“People love to see the behind-the-scenes of a business. It helps build trust when you share your story,” Haily shares. These videos can be as simple as ‘a day in the life at my company’ videos, CEO FAQs, and ‘meet the team’ videos — anything that helps your audience feel like they’re part of your story.

Choosing the right platform for your brand

It can be overwhelming to consider adding video to your marketing strategy — there are so many platforms, and all have different best practices and trends. How do you pick? Well, the good news is, you don’t need to tackle them all at once. Haily says, “It’s all about knowing where your audience is.”

Pick a few platforms that most closely align with your audience and focus your content efforts there.

Haily suggests making videos specifically for each platform you’re targeting instead of trying a one-size fits all approach. “You can’t put a YouTube video on TikTok and expect it to be successful,” Haily explains. “Focus on where your audience is, and go to them. Seek them out.”

Can you repurpose video content?

That’s not to say you can never repurpose video content — some platforms work well together, like TikTok and Instagram Reels.

But it’s not always the case. “A video made for TikTok will often do fine on Facebook or Instagram, but you have to package it differently,” Haily shares. “The ideas will translate across all platforms, but the way that you portray those ideas will vary slightly.”

Haily’s advice? “Plan to have different content on different platforms.”

Be an early adopter and reap the rewards

Haily’s top tip for getting ahead online as a smaller brand is to embrace new platforms and features early.

It’s often a losing battle to try and grow on YouTube these days — it’s an over-saturated market, and almost impossible to stand out. But when YouTube launched YouTube Shorts, smaller brands were in with a chance.

“Platforms will typically reward people who embrace a new product or feature,” Haily explains. Jumping on YouTube shorts when it was still new meant that the YouTube algorithm was more likely to boost your content.

Experimenting with new platforms and new features on a platform is a powerful way to get ahead.

“It’s also a good way to mix up your content and try new things,” Haily shares. “Be willing to try it, be willing to change your content strategy to incorporate it. Be consistent. Engage with other people who are in your target audience, and success will come.”

Key takeaways

  • Video isn’t just for the big guys anymore — anyone can create professional videos
  • Try starting with a customer testimonial or product demo video
  • Always tell a story
  • Choose the platform that best aligns with your target audience
  • Don’t be afraid to experiment with new platforms and features — reap the rewards of being an early adopter

Ah, the workplace — where mundane memos and awkward water cooler chats used to reign supreme. But fear not, for the tech wizards have swooped in, waving their digital wands and casting a spell of efficient, dynamic communication across the professional realm.

Over the past 30 years, technology has revolutionized workplace communication, flipping the script and changing the game. Buckle up for a journey through the digital evolution that’s made business communication a breeze.

1. Email: The trailblazing messenger — 1990s

Remember the days of snail mail? Neither do we, thanks to the modern marvel that is email. It’s like a magical pigeon that zips through cyberspace, delivering your messages in the blink of an eye. Invented in 1971 and popularized throughout the 90s and early 2000s, email continues to rule the corporate world.

Here’s how email changed the game:

  • Instant gratification: No more drumming your fingers, waiting for a response. Emails are like lightning bolts of communication, ensuring swift replies.

  • Global collaboration: Colleagues scattered around the globe can now collaborate seamlessly. Attachments, documents, and spreadsheets fly across borders like digital carrier pigeons.

  • Goodbye, snail mail: Traditional mail has been sent packing, reducing the time it takes to exchange vital information.

2. Video conferencing: Bridging continents, one call at a time — 2000s

Let’s face it — international flights for meetings weren’t exactly the epitome of convenience. Enter video conferencing, where the world becomes your conference room.

Free video conferencing platforms, like Skype, started showing up in corporate offices in the 2000s — and really exploded in 2020 thanks to the global pandemic.

  • Globetrotting, virtually: Zoom and Skype have turned time-consuming and costly face-to-face meetings into a thing of the past. Hello, virtual face time!

  • Ecological gold star: Reduced travel means fewer carbon footprints, saving both money and the planet.

  • Business without borders: Collaboration knows no boundaries when video conferencing links you with clients and partners worldwide.

3. Instant messaging: The real-time connectors — 2010s

Face-to-face meetings? So last century. Say hello to instant messaging apps, where real-time communication takes center stage. Apps like Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Google Hangouts are the new VIPs of the digital workplace.

First popularized in the early 2000s, instant messaging in the workplace really took off with dedicated messaging platforms, like Slack, from around 2014.

Move over email, instant messaging has something to say.

  • Real-time magic: No need to wait for office hours – ping your co-workers anytime and get quick responses, no time zone barriers included.

  • Multimedia bonanza: Sharing files, videos, and screen sharing? It’s all part of the package. No need to play guessing games with emails anymore.

  • No more desk chains: Say goodbye to being chained to your desk. These apps set you free to communicate while on the move.

4. Mobile apps: The office in your pocket — late 2010s

Gone are the days of being tethered to your desk. Mobile technology is your ticket to a mobile office. Workplace communication apps are now available on people’s phones and can move with them wherever they are.

Work-related mobile apps, like Notion — launched in 2018, are the new norm.

  • Remote work revolution: Access crucial emails, documents, and colleagues’ wisdom from anywhere, anytime.

  • Balancing act: Juggling work and life just became a lot easier. Mobile tech lets you enjoy your morning coffee while nailing that presentation.

  • 24/7 connection: Not just a convenience, but a lifeline. Stay in the loop and make important decisions on the fly.

5. Async video messaging: Lights, camera, collaboration — now

Hold onto your director’s chair, because there’s a new star in the workplace communication scene: async video messaging. Imagine this — you record a video message, send it off, and your recipient watches and responds at their own convenience.

Platforms like Biteable are taking the power of video and prioritizing the benefits of async communication to create a video messaging powerhouse.

Here’s why async video messaging is shaking things up:

  • Memorable, digestible visual storytelling: Forget lengthy emails or chats. With async video messaging, you can craft a compelling narrative, complete with gestures, expressions, and visuals, to get your message across in a more engaging and memorable way.

  • A personal touch, anytime: Async video messaging adds a personal touch that text can’t match. It bridges the gap between face-to-face interactions and written messages, creating a more meaningful connection. Better yet, it defies time zones. Async video messaging lets you communicate effectively without waking up at the crack of dawn or burning the midnight oil.

  • Embracing multitasking: Your recipient can watch your video while grabbing a coffee or reviewing a report – it’s multitasking at its finest. This flexibility can enhance productivity and allow for smoother communication.

As the saying goes, the only constant in life is change. Well, in the world of work, change is not just a constant; it’s the very rhythm that beats at the heart of every industry. With new technologies and a new demand for up-skilled employees, the future of workplace learning is taking shape, fast.

Drawing insights from an enlightening session hosted by the World Economic Forum, we’ll delve into transformative trends that are shaping the way we acquire knowledge and skills at work.

Embracing the winds of change

“Shift happens” — pardon the playful twist on words, but it’s apt. The mantra of the future? It’s continuous and lifelong learning. In this era of ephemeral skills and ever-evolving industries, the art of adaptability is the secret to success. To stay in the game, you want to collect as many new skills as you can.

Organizations are tapping into this ethos, dishing out learning opportunities like a buffet, fostering a culture that’s more dynamic than a trapeze act in a windstorm.

Companies that start investing in learning and development now will be the trailblazers of tomorrow’s professional landscape. They’ll be the pioneers who aren’t just reacting to change but driving it. By prioritizing continuous learning, organizations create a workforce that’s not only adaptable but also empowered. It’s a strategic move that sets the stage for innovation, growth, and resilience.

A digital learning fiesta

Remember when learning was synonymous with musty libraries and dusty textbooks? Well, welcome to the future, where digital platforms are making learning fun. Whether you’re a night owl, an early bird, or a lunchtime nomad, you can feast on knowledge anytime, anywhere. The rise of remote work and far-flung teams has given rise to this digital extravaganza, where learning is as accessible as a midnight snack.

With an online platform for almost anything you could think of — from virtual whiteboards and workspaces, to bite-sized video learning content — there’s no excuse to stick to the Lunch and Learn.

Create videos that drive action

Activate your customers or team with impactful, on-brand videos.

From mentorship to friend-torship

Gone are the days of stuffy, top-down lectures that feel like watching paint dry. Instead, picture this: a mentor-mentee tête-à-tête that’s a cross between a brainstorming session and a friendly coffee chat. We’ve seen an undeniable uprising of mentorship and peer learning. It’s like swapping trading cards, but instead you’re exchanging knowledge nuggets.

And guess what? Learning is not a one-way street; it’s a buzzing roundabout of knowledge sharing and insights. Mentoring programs, peer-to-peer knowledge exchange, and cross-functional playdates are the new cool. Friend-torship is the future.

An immersive wonderland of learning

Ready to pop on your virtual reality headgear and plunge into an alternate dimension? Well, hold on to your hats (or headsets), because immersive technologies like virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are weaving their magic into the world of learning. Imagine stepping into a virtual lab, where you can conduct experiments without worrying about blowing up the building. These immersive technologies are turning learning into an exhilarating rollercoaster, with simulations, scenarios, and hands-on experiences that make your heart race faster than a caffeine buzz.

Lightspeed learning with video

Video is dynamic medium that’s not only informative but also deeply engaging. It’s like a bridge between knowledge and entertainment, making learning feel less like a chore and more like a riveting Netflix binge.

Time is a precious commodity, and video respects that. It’s like a cosmic shortcut to learning, condensing hours of information into bite-sized, easily digestible chunks. Whether you’re on a five-minute coffee break or waiting for your ride home, video lets you sneak in a quick lesson, making the most of every spare moment. It’s like having a personal tutor on speed dial, ready to drop knowledge bombs whenever you need them.

Here’s the best part: You’re not just a passive viewer in this cinematic adventure. You’re the director of your own learning journey. With video, you can hit pause, rewind, and replay to your heart’s content. Didn’t catch that instruction? Rewind and watch again. Want to revisit that inspiring quote? Hit pause and jot it down. Video gives you the reins, allowing you to craft your learning experience in a way that’s tailor-made for your needs.

Chart the course of tomorrow with Biteable

As we wrap up our quick tour of the future of workplace learning, it’s clear that the horizon is ablaze with possibilities. The roadmap is etched with the ink of continuous learning, collaboration, immersive technology, and digital convenience.

In the bustling world of social media marketing, where every pixel vies for attention, one element has emerged as the reigning champion of catching eyes, sparking interest, and leaving a lasting impression: videos. It’s like giving your brand a megaphone in a bustling marketplace — bold, dynamic, and impossible to ignore. Let’s dive into the electrifying world of video content and unravel why it’s the secret sauce to amplify your social media marketing game.

Are social media videos worth it?

Picture this: You’re leisurely scrolling through your social media feed, thumbing past a sea of still images and text-heavy posts. Suddenly, something grabs your attention — a video clip. Your gaze is magnetically drawn to the moving images, the play of colors, and the engaging story. That’s the magic of videos. They’re the showstoppers of the digital world, effortlessly conveying messages in a way that static images or words could only dream of.

With videos, you can paint a vivid picture of your products or services in action. It’s like inviting your audience into your world, allowing them to experience your offering firsthand. Whether it’s a product demonstration, a software walkthrough, or a behind-the-scenes peek into your business, videos bring your brand to life and bridge the gap between imagination and reality.

Building trust and credibility

Remember the old adage, “Seeing is believing”? Well, it couldn’t be truer in the realm of social media marketing. When your audience witnesses your product or service in action, it fosters a sense of trust and credibility. It’s like meeting someone face-to-face — you get a feel for their personality, their authenticity, and their intentions.

Videos allow your audience to see your offering’s real-world benefits and gauge its value, creating a stronger connection and boosting their confidence in your brand.

How to craft compelling videos

Videos are your canvas for creative expression. They offer a playground of possibilities, where you can paint your brand story with vibrant hues of innovation. As TikTok and Instagram Reels continue to dominate the land of viral content, video needs to be part of your marketing strategy. Biteable’s TikTok whizz, Haily Moulton, joined Mike on The Video Vantage Podcast to chat about the ins and outs of boosting social media engagement with viral-worthy videos.

How do you create attention-grabbing social media videos?

Of course, no one really knows the secret to creating viral video content — there’s always an element of luck and happenstance involved — but Haily knows a thing or two about creating consistently engaging content. Biteable’s TikTok account boasts over 5.5M views and 38.4K followers — not to mention another 1.6M views over on Haily’s own TikTok account

So what’s the secret to creating attention-grabbing social media videos? Mike and Haily agree that you need to jump right into it.

Be snappy

“Add a hook in the first second of your video,” Haily shares. “You want to be just a little bit clickbaity.”

Let people know what you’re about to say before you delve into the specifics, then you can take your time explaining it.

Keep things visually interesting

Another thing Haily likes to do in the first second of a video is add some sort of visual transition — whether that’s a jump cut, a zoom-in, or a different clip. This helps keep your audience visually engaged.

“There’s a common tactic on TikTok where people will tell stories while doing something completely unrelated — like making a sandwich,” Haily explains. “It just helps grab and keep attention spans.”

Stay on trend

Nothing will boost your chances of striking the viral jackpot more than jumping on video trends quickly and cleverly. Haily recommends making the most of trending sounds on TikTok, and putting your own spin on the trend while it’s still timely.

Notice how you watch

Don’t discount your own experiences as an audience member. Haily suggests always paying attention to what’s grabbing your attention while watching videos, and, more importantly, what’s losing it.

“Sometimes it’s bad lighting, the angle was weird, the video’s too slow to get started,” Haily explains. Not to mention the “millennial pause” — a brief, awkward blank stare millennials are prone to keeping at the start of videos — “you completely lose your viewers in that half a second.”

The importance of keeping up with viral trends

Now for the big question — how does one consistently leverage trends and viral topics? Coming up with new, engaging video ideas on a daily or weekly basis is no small task. So how does Haily do it?

Find your niche and know your trends

“I think there are really clever ways you can apply trends to whatever niche you’ve already set up on your channel,” Haily shares.

It’s all about staying on top of trending audios and thinking of relevant, relatable scenarios within your niche.

Knowing your niche, and being quick on the uptake, are two essential ingredients for good social media video content. But, it’s also more than just that — Haily believes a big part of Biteable’s TikTok success is about trust.

Trust your social media managers

“It’s not just that the videos are funny and relatable, but the leadership team trusts my ideas — I’m not running through layers of approval,” Haily explains. “It might be 5 minutes from when I had the idea to when the post goes live. I think that’s what really works these days. Being able to be quick and agile — and that requires trust.”

You heard it here first, folks: Trust your social media managers.

Jump on the bandwagon, fast

When it comes to TikTok, the faster you jump on a trend, the more likely you are to be blessed by the algorithm. Here’s an example of when Haily jumped on the bandwagon pretty quickly. When Haily posted the video, the TikTok sound only had around 600 videos — by the next day, the sound was being used all over TikTok.

Thanks to Haily’s speedy thinking (and ability to work quickly, without a complicated approvals process), within 24 hours, this TikTok generated over 1 million views and currently has over 170,000 likes.

What’s the best length for a successful social media video?

Best practices vary across social media platforms, which can make determining the ideal length for your video content a confusing process.

Since we’re a small marketing team here at Biteable, we’re all about repurposing content and, “figuring out how to get the most juice out of that squeeze,” as Haily puts it.

“The first thing I consider is ‘where is that video going to be posted?’” Haily says.

Where your video will end up should be your main indicator for length. The type of content you create, and your audience, will also play a role in determining the best length of your content.

According to Haily, Biteable’s video content generally sits within these timeframes:

  • TikTok and Instagram Reels: 7 to 10 seconds
  • YouTube Shorts: 30 seconds to a minute
  • YouTube videos: 2 to 3 minutes

The power of understanding your audience

Just like with any other type of marketing, when it comes to creating video content, it’s imperative to understand who your audience is and what they’re looking for.

“For me, that’s marketing 101,” Mike says. “Know who you’re talking to and who you’re serving.”

Knowing as much as possible about your audience will benefit both you and your audience.

Haily uses a video’s soundtrack as an example of this. Soundtracks set the tone of your video, so it’s important to choose something that suits your audience.

“A more corporate audience is likely to expect a soundtrack with a corporate vibe about it — a classic piano and violin tune. Whereas if you’re targeting a Gen Z audience, they might fall asleep when they hear that, so you need something a little more upbeat,” Haily says.

How to measure the success of social media videos

All good marketing strategies must be measurable, and social media videos are no different. With a wealth of analytics to pick from, what should we be looking at to say “that worked” or “that did not work”?

Haily says engagement rates are where it’s at: “I’ll also look at how many people our content is reaching, but engagement is what tells you whether or not your message landed.”

It can also be helpful to gauge the sentiment of that engagement. Are the comments agreeing with you, or did that video stir up some controversy?

Is all engagement good engagement?

Is controversial content something to strive for? Is one controversial post a reason to panic? Haily says all engagement is good engagement in a way. “It still gets your brand name and awareness out there.”

But striving for controversy isn’t a strategy that Haily suggests. “It’s important for your audience to trust you and your authenticity — that you’re not doing things just for the click.”

In terms of Biteable’s comment section, Haily says we’ve been lucky to keep things pretty positive.

“We’re really lucky that Biteable’s comment section is generally a really positive place. Sometimes a video will end up on the wrong side of the algorithm, but there isn’t really much you can do about that,” Haily explains.

Using one of Biteable’s more popular TikToks as an example, Haily shares her experience dealing with angry commenters.

“I posted a TikTok about taking a shower in the middle of the work day. 95% of commenters found it relatable, and maybe only 5% said things like ‘you’re so lazy, go back to the office’”, Haily says. “That engagement still helped spread the video further.”

Key takeaways

  • Jump on trends as quickly as you can
  • Keep things visually interesting — and be snappy!
  • Trust your social media managers
  • Know your audience
  • Measure your success
